Content replacement (P-3002)

There are many good reasons to replace some content for print publishing purposes. Examples are:

  • Expansion of abbreviations
  • Modify formatting
  • Transform span classes
  • Embedded links and images
  • Change wording
  • Data cleanup

However the problem of content replacement is more of a challenge than it appears at first glance.

Description

Beyond Simple Search and Replace

When you are repurposing product data that was originally intended for use on a web page, simple search and replace functionality will not meet your needs. This is because the content to be replaced is: (a) frequently HTML; and (b) varies from product to product. For example, you might have an HTML fragment in your description that refers to accessory products. Or you might have an embedded link to an installation video. In cases such as these, you often want to keep the core content (say, the name of the accessory product), but change the content that surrounds the core content. In order to accomplish this, you need the component that we call “Content Package Replacement”.

Introducing “Content Packages”

To define a content package, you need to specify the:

(a) “before” starting text string,
(b) “before” ending text string,
(c) “after” starting text string, and
(d) “after” ending text string.

Container replacment will replace (a) with (c), and replace (b) with (d). Everything insde the starting and ending strings will be untouched.

Simple Example

For example, suppose your descriptions contain something like this:

Also compatible with <span class=”xyz”>Models 765W, H377N, and 91YR</span>.

In this example, you want to keep the substance of the sentence, but replace the span tag with say, the strong tag. To do this, you would define the “before” starting text string as:

Also compatible with <span class=”xyz”>

The “before” ending text string is:

</span>

The “after” starting text string as:

Also compatible with <strong>

The “after” ending text string is:

</strong>

Any number of containers

You can specify any number of replacement containers.

  • Starting text of the “from” content package
  • Ending text of the “from” content package
  • Starting text of the “to” content package
  • Ending text of the “to” content package
